Welcome back for another riveting edition of Top Dynasty Buys and Sells! Just as the title suggests, this time, we are going to be looking at the wide receiver position to help you find trades that you should be targeting to put your dynasty team in its best position to succeed. This one feels a little spicy, so grab a bottle of Pepto or a few Tums, and let’s get into it.
Wide Receiver Buy – Jayden Reed
The rookie wide receivers from the 2023 draft class made themselves heard this last year. It wasn’t necessarily the first ones picked off the board, either. Jordan Addison was expected to be a complimentary piece to Justin Jefferson, and he ended up being one of the best low-end WR2s in the league. Staying in the same division with the same line of thinking is Jayden Reed, who was selected a round later than Addison but ended up with a similar ranking at the end of the season, finishing a few spots behind his division rival as WR25.
While he might have finished lower than Addison, I expect this to be just the beginning for the young wide receiver. Reed averaged 13.6 points per game last season, which puts him in second among rookie wide receivers, behind only Tank Dell on a PPG basis. Jayden was efficient with the targets he received as he only averaged 5.9 targets per game. What’s more encouraging is the fact that those targets raised as the end of the season neared, which shows that Jordan Love began to trust the young receiver more. As that trust and the chemistry between them continues to grow, I expect Reed to become an even bigger compliment in the offense. In fact, right now he is the Green Bay wide receiver you want out of the young core, in my opinion.
Now as far as his cost goes, he won’t be as cheap as some might like. According to Dynasty League Football, his value is right around that of a late 2024 first round pick, which is right around where I have him as well. If you are competing for the championship this next year, I would rather have what I know I’m getting with Reed than one of those rookies you would be getting at the end of the first round. Another option, and one that I like a little bit more, would be to sell your 2025 first round pick for him. That way you can still get one of the talented rookie wide receivers coming out this year and have the insurance that Reed will be there to help get you over the hump if nothing else. If you’re going for the championship, that 2025 pick should be a late one anyways, so why not take the chance?
Wide Receiver Sell – Chris Godwin
This one hurts me to write, but I think it’s the right move, so I’m telling you now: Sell Chris Godwin. I’m picking on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers now that I’ve written two articles in a row saying to sell their players. That’s not the case, I promise. I have been a big fan of Godwin since he came out and have always tried to roster him wherever possible. However, there hasn’t been as much return on investment as I would hope and I’m realizing I’ve been wrong on him. Is he a good wide receiver? Absolutely. But he’s not worth the 74th average draft position that he is going in right now, an ADP that is also on the rise.
Godwin has the ceiling to be a top-end receiver, as he has finished as a top-three wide receiver before. When you look at all of his other finishes, you realize that he has only finished as a WR1 that one time in 2019. He’s a good WR2 in most seasons, but that has only happened twice in PPR leagues. It is disappointing for me to acknowledge it, but he has been a WR3 or flex for the majority of his career. Now, there is a hope that Godwin will be in a better place in the offense with the new coaching crew coming in. There is a hope that Godwin will be moved to the slot to play the Cooper Kupp role that Liam Coen implemented while with the Los Angeles Rams. However, I am not expecting the 28-year-old receiver to revitalize his career to that level. You should be using that hope to sell now while you can.
Looking at his value, DLF has Godwin going for a late 2024 first-round pick. This, to me, seems like the perfect opportunity to sell him for one of these younger wide receivers that are coming out in the draft. Or maybe, just maybe, sell him for Jayden Reed! If the Jayden Reed owner is in a position to compete, you might be able to leverage the hype behind Godwin for this season to pry Reed away from them. Regardless of how you decide to go about it, selling Godwin right now might be the last time you can sell him for this level of value.
