Hello, and welcome to my debut article with Fantasy In Frames! I am psyched to have this opportunity to help you win your leagues. My goal is to make you a better fantasy player, and what better way to start this off than by discussing some of my top dynasty buys and sells at the quarterback position? Without any further delay, let’s get into it!
Top Dynasty Buy – Baker Mayfield
When it comes to buys and sells, I like to look at whether or not my team is set to compete or if I’m looking at rebuilding. If I am competing, I am looking for someone to buy that I can add to my team that will be a difference maker for me in the coming season but won’t break the bank. Someone that another competitor might have that they’d be more than willing to sell now to make a profit and might not be looking at the player’s ability in the long run.
Look no further than Baker Mayfield.
Mayfield was the 1.01 pick in the 2018 draft class, which is weird because if you had told me that he’s only signed two contracts, I would have asked you what year it was. Seriously, it feels like Mayfield has been in the league for at least a decade at this point. The journeyman quarterback has bounced around his fair share for someone who just finished their rookie contract in 2022. With the success that he found while playing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he should be set on finding a new home at a slightly higher pay scale than the $6 million he was making with incentives. In fact, I would be surprised if he makes it out of Tampa without a new contract signed.
This is one of the reasons why Mayfield is a buy for me right now: there is so much unknown about his situation that I am willing to gamble on his future while others might be trying to get out from under him while they can. While others are afraid of the slippery conditions that might be awaiting Mayfield, I’m steering into the skid and attempting to get him at as much of a discount as I can. Especially when it comes to superflex formats where it is difficult to get anyone to let go of their quarterbacks. Mayfield is someone you should be able to find a suitor to make the deal with.
If I’m looking at Baker Mayfield and his Top 10 Quarterback finish this last year, I’m willing to put up a high-end second, low-end first to make the trade happen in superflex leagues. I’d make it a low-end second if it’s a single-quarterback league.
Top Dynasty Sell – Kirk Cousins
As a Vikings fan, this one hurts a little bit. However, all good things must come to an end, and it looks like Cousins ending in Minnesota has arrived. My reasoning for selling isn’t because he’s not going to be a Viking anymore; it’s because he’s an aging quarterback who is most likely journeying to a new offense after a season-ending injury.
Now, the injury isn’t as detrimental to Cousins as a quarterback as it might be to, say, a running back or someone that requires more use of their Achilles. I don’t want to talk about Cam Akers right now…
Seriously though, we’re talking a season ending injury in a quarterback who is going to be 37 before the season begins. Cousins has consistently been a low end QB1/high end QB2. I expect that to change with him most likely moving to a new team this coming season. For one, you never know what level of offense Cousins will be dealing with. It’s highly doubtful that he’ll be throwing a top tier wide receiver and tight end in Justin Jefferson and TJ Hockenson. There are a couple of places he could land that would have me intrigued, such as Denver or Atlanta, but I’m looking to capitalize on the aging quarterback while I can before he goes some place like New England or Las Vegas.
Now are you likely to get a lot for him? Probably not as much as you are hoping. He is probably right around the asking price for Mayfield, actually. The key difference is the eight years in age difference. In fact, that would be a trade I would try to do: Cousins and a 2024 third for Mayfield. If I can get younger while maintaining the same amount of production, I’m doing it.
