The New York Giants Sign Russell Wilson: 2025 Fantasy Football Implications

Fantasy Football Breaking New: Russell Wilson to Giants | Fantasy In Frames

The New York Giants have added a veteran to their quarterback room, as the team has signed Russell Wilson to a one-year, $21 million deal.

This price tag is starting quarterback money, so Wilson will undoubtedly be the day-one starter for New York with no competition with Jameis Winston or a rookie. From a real-life standpoint, I do not think much of Russell Wilson as a player at this point in his career. From a fantasy perspective, though, Wilson is a low-range functional asset in an offense and still support his weapons from a fantasy value perspective.

For Russell Wilson’s 2025 fantasy value, this is not a great situation if you ask me. At this point in his career, Wilson is nowhere near a fantasy asset you want on your team. Maybe a waiver wire option during the year here and there, but not someone you should be going out of your way to draft, even in the later rounds. In 2024, with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Russell Wilson averaged 16.5 fantasy points per game. This is a middling number for a starting quarterback in fantasy terms, so it is clear that there is no ceiling left with this player anymore at this point. The high-end rushing upside is not even there anymore like it used to be, as Russell Wilson totaled just 155 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns last year with the Steelers. The athleticism and scrambling ability are gone at this point in Wilson’s career. Russell Wilson is fine as a bye week or injury fill-in for 2025 fantasy football, but generally speaking, fantasy managers should stay away from the player in drafts this year.

Even though Russell Wilson is a very flawed quarterback at this point in his career, his addition is a massive win for stud receiver Malik Nabers for 2025 fantasy football. With a musical chairs situation at quarterback in 2024, Malik Nabers averaged 11.2 targets per game and 80.4 receiving yards per game. If Nabers can already put up monster numbers with such a horrible quarterback situation, there is no reason to think why he cannot repeat that or even improve on that production in 2025 with a competent quarterback at the helm, finally. Russell Wilson loves to chuck deep balls downfield, which is a huge positive for Malik Nabers, as that is where the second-year star thrives. Fantasy managers should be extremely high on Malik Nabers for 2025 and have no issues taking the young stud in the first round of drafts this summer. Due to Russell Wilson’s play style at this point in his career, there is seemingly no cap on Nabers’ ceiling from a target and production standpoint in 2025. I do not care about any of the other passing game weapons outside of Nabers in the Giants’ offense right now. Wan’Dale Robinson has never been an overly productive player in his career, Jalin Hyatt cannot get on the field and earn playing time, Darius Slayton is nothing more than one or two deep shots a game, and Theo Johnson is still extremely raw. It is Nabers in this offense, and nobody else right now.

A sneaky winner in all this is second-year running back Tyrone Tracy, as Russell Wilson loves to check down to his running backs. In 2024 with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Jaylen Warren averaged 3.0 targets per game and 20.7 receiving yards per game. These numbers show that Russell Wilson is a very running-back-friendly quarterback, so Tracy should have a big year in 2025 in the receiving department, which is a very good thing for fantasy. Fantasy managers should be very comfortable with taking Tyrone Tracy in the middle rounds of drafts this summer. The young running back could be a big upside play at value if everything goes right in 2025.
