Player Overview
As we head into the 2023 NFL season, it’s looking like we are going to see Rachaad White get his opportunity to be the full-time RB after being drafted out of Arizona State in the third round last year. Gone is Leonard Fournette, and in comes Chase Edmonds via free agency to join White in the backfield. In White’s rookie season, we saw flashes where he could succeed, especially in the second half of the season where he started eating into Leonard Fournette’s touches. He also showed he could catch the ball out of the backfield with great success. In fact, back in June, he said in an interview with SiriusXM that he has been working more on his ball-catching abilities because he is expected to be involved more in the passing game with more empty looks and even being spread out wide.
The Bucs unfortunately also saw the Goat in Tom Brady hang up his cleats for the final time, and decided to bring in Baker Mayfield from his quick stint with the LA Rams. He is expected to compete with Kyle Trask for the QB1 spot who they drafted late in the second round back in 2021. The Bucs also felt the need to make some changes to the offensive line by letting LT Donovan Smith leave for Kansas City and replacing him in-house with starting RT Tristan Wirfs. He will move over to the LT spot where he does have a little familiarity at the position playing in four games at the University of Iowa. They also brought in LG Matt Feiler from the LA Chargers who started in 33 games in two years helping protect QB Justin Herbert.
Fantasy Summary
Rachaad White enters the season with, let’s be honest, uncertainty at his fantasy outlook. As a rookie last season being the RB2 behind Leonard Fournette he finished with 481 yards on the ground and chipped in an additional 290 receiving yards giving him a total of 781 total yards of offense. These numbers may seem a bit modest at the surface, but you have to realize that most of this production came in the second half of the season where we slowly started to see White take over this backfield in Tampa. He finished the season as the RB11 in receptions catching 50 balls just behind Josh Jacobs, Alvin Kamara and Saquon Barkley. What I find impressive about this stat is he did it while only seeing a 39.3% of the snap share per PFF. If he can build upon his rookie campaign, and you add in the fact he will get more opportunities as the lead back with no real threat of losing his starting job then I think we have ourselves a legit breakout candidate in Rachaad White.
His ADP over at FantasyPros is 61 overall or RB23. He is being drafted on average behind other RBs JK Dobbins, James Conner, Dameon Pierce, and Cam Akers. I would move Rachaad White up over all of these players and slot him in at RB19 behind Miles Sanders and bank on a breakout performance where I could see him getting up and over combined, rushing and receiving 1,000 yards.
