Today, in our 2024 Rookie Profile series, we’ll discuss Quarterback Bo Nix!

Player Overview

Bo Nix is a five-year starter, having played three years at Auburn and two at Oregon. He is an extremely smart quarterback with the athleticism to back it up. He reminds me of Matthew Stafford but with better rushing ability. His downfield vision led him to throw for 45 TDs and finish third in the Heisman. Denver drafted him 12th, making him the sixth quarterback off the board. He will now be in the quarterback room with Zach Wilson, Jarrett Stidham, and Head Coach Sean Payton.

Rookie Summary

Nix was above average as a Freshman, but then he really began to fizz out. That is why moving to Oregon was so pivotal, where he shined his Junior and Senior years. He was a later bloomer in the knowledge of how to be an all-around QB willing to use his arm and his legs to extend plays. He was projected to go in the 1st to Broncos or Saints. The Broncos have Coach Payton, who developed Brees into an elite QB, and the Broncos did draft him. I think he has a huge upside with his knowledge and maturity to become an eventual starter in the NFL, but the issue is he will most likely be a Day 1 starter in Denver. This is because he has no real leader in the QB to learn from. I could see Stidham starting a game or two if Payton feels unready. Yet, in reality, Payton will make him ready. Nix might not fully grasp his NFL playstyle until game six or seven, and the Broncos have one of the hardest projected game schedules in the league.

Fantasy Value

These days, it’s all about rushing QBs and quick decision-making on the field. Everyone is chasing Mahomes greatness and standout 2023 rookie elite Stroud. The last QB to leave Oregon was Herbert, and his rookie campaign was crazy good, but remember, it took a needle to Tyrod’s chest to give him the start. This is the path I wish for Nix (no, not the needle part) but the backup one, which most likely won’t happen at all. Even though he is an older rookie with 5-year starter knowledge, he still has room to learn.

He has shown us that he can accurately throw into tight windows and put the ball where only his receivers can get it, but he also could use more arm strength for the big, deep balls. His 2023 campaign gave us a 77% completion rate, and he was ranked #1 in all of college football with his 1% turnover rate. Crazy good game management there! I like him to have a decent NFL career but don’t like him to start out of the gates, but I will say he has one of the best Coaches in Sean Payton, to get him ready for Day 1 starting. Take a flyer on him early 2nd because it’s hard to pass on a potential starting QB in Superflex, and he can be trade bait!
