Greetings, fellow fantasy football fans! It’s your boy Dynasty Deviant, here again with another edition of the Fantasy In Frames Dynasty Target Profile series where we help you identify players in your dynasty league who have the potential to provide excellent value.
I don’t know if you’ve heard yet, but football is on it’s way back, and I personally couldn’t be more excited!
Today, I would like to introduce you to Bryce Young, the QB1 for the Carolina Panthers. Ok, ok, I can already hear your collective groans through the screen. But, before you dismiss him outright, remember this, your opponents are only reading about the top tier players. This is where we can gain an edge heading into next season!
There are some compelling reasons why you should consider targeting Young, or at the very least, give him a closer look. And no, you don’t need a microscope!
Let’s dive in and explore his potential.
Player Overview
Bryce Young, who was drafted as the number one pick by the Panthers in 2023, had a disappointing rookie season to say the least. He is now entering his sophomore season and hopes to bounce back and improve.
Although it is highly likely that Young will start for the Panthers, the team has undergone several changes in staffing. They have a new head coach, Dave Canales, and a new offensive coordinator, Brad Idzik. Both these coaches are first-timers in their positions. Both have had relative success, which bodes well for Young.
The Panthers were in dire need of improving their skill positions to support their young quarterback. According to PFF, the Panthers’ offensive line ranked in the bottom 6th in the league in both pass and run blocking grades. The team made moves in an effort to upgrade that line to protect Bryce better than his rookie season.
The team also traded for WR Diontae Johnson and drafted WR Xavier Legette along with RB Jonathon Brooks to help the anemic offense from last year.
Player Summary
Bryce Young had a tough start to his NFL career in 2023, but there were external factors that likely contributed to his poor performance. During his rookie season, there was a lot of turmoil between team ownership and the coaching staff, which resulted in many staff changes mid-season.
The team’s offense struggled week after week, with Adam Thielen being the only reliable weapon. The run game was ineffective, with Miles Sanders seemingly disappearing. And the aforementioned offensive line left Bryce constantly scrambling for dear life.
Despite the struggles of his rookie season, there’s still reason for optimism about Young’s future. With a year of experience and consistency in the coaching staff, he’s poised for improvement. The Panthers have hired Dave Canales, a coach with a track record of developing quarterbacks like Geno Smith and Baker Mayfield, as their new head coach. This is a good sign for Young’s growth.
The Panthers didn’t spend a lot of money on the offensive side of the ball in free agency, but they did make some encouraging moves for the rising sophomore QB. They traded for Diontae Johnson, who will most definitely provide juice to that mediocre receiving corps. They also signed two new guards and an offensive tackle to shore up the inept O-line from a year ago.
Additionally, they added pieces on defense to help keep the team competitive. If these players and Canales can help Young mature, there’s good reason to believe we’ll see significant progress from the young quarterback.
Trade Value
The Dynasty League Football (DLF) has evaluated Bryce Young’s current trade value to be a late first-round pick (1.10) in Superflex leagues. In a Superflex league, he may be worth considering at the end of the first round since quarterbacks tend to retain their value for a longer period.
According to DLF’s April ADP for rookies, Xavier Worthy and Troy Franklin are in the range of the 1.10 & 1.11 picks. Depending on team makeup, there could be a case made for Young over the incoming rookie WRs. We know that he will be starting, and in a Superflex league, most weeks 24 quarterbacks will be started in leagues.
Last year left a bad taste in the mouths of owners, and the Panthers don’t draw a ton of national interest. Therefore, you may be able to sneak a trade for a starting NFL QB in a Superflex for a mid to late second. And reap the benefits if Young becomes what the Panthers hoped when they drafted him.
It may be too early to label Bryce Young as a bust. Last year, he faced a lot of challenges. Team conflicts and talent on the offensive side of the ball, made it hard for him to succeed.
It will be interesting to see if he can recover from such a tough start to his career. Will he come back strong like Tua , or will he follow in the footsteps of Zach Wilson? I’m willing to take a chance on him at the right price.
Again, in dynasty, you need to find the undervalued pieces that can bring back a higher return. Bryce Young fits the bill perfectly going into the 2024 season. Let’s rise above the challenge of our rivals!
