What’s up, everyone? Welcome to another installment of Fantasy In Frames’ Dynasty Target Profile series, where we prepare you to dominate your dynasty leagues this year.
If you’re reading this in May, I know you’re eager for the season to start and want to get a head start on the rest of your league-mates who think this is the “offseason”!
Today, we will discuss nothing other than the polarizing Antonio Gibson. Will 2024 be the year it all comes together, and we fantasy brethren finally get the Gibson we have been dreaming of? I get it, you’re boarding the ‘I Won’t Trust Him’ train, and I get it but…but…hear me out, won’t ya?
Player Overview
After experiencing strange usage and being underutilized in Ron Rivera’s doghouse, Gibson was finally free to hit the market and seek a fresh start on a new team. Antonio Gibson was an unrestricted free agent in 2024 and believers rejoiced. For about 2 minutes before Gibby decided to take his talents to New England.
This could have presented an excellent opportunity for Gibson, but he landed on a team going through lots of changes: a new coach, a new QB, generally bad vibes, and not to mention an entrenched starter.
We have seen what Gibson is capable of as a feature back and in a committee role, however, many were confused by the lack of usage for the fourth-year player out of Memphis in the past two seasons with the Commanders.
Gibson finds himself as the other running back to Rhamondre Stevenson, and if he is the change of pace or passing down back in New England, he could be on the field catching check-downs from a young QB and return more fantasy points than last year in Washington. A low bar I know, but you get my point!
Player Summary
Antonio Gibson has shown great potential in the NFL, with his breakout season being his second year. During the 2021 season, he proved himself to be a feature back, rushing for over 1000 yards with seven touchdowns and adding another 294 yards and three touchdowns in the receiving game.
Washington used Gibson sparingly in the past two seasons, leaving him fresher than most 26-year-old running backs. In the 2024 season, Gibson has the opportunity to shine. The incumbent, Rhamondre Stevenson, missed a lot of time last season and is a slower runner. Gibson can be the faster complement to Rhamondre’s style, which could benefit the team considering their makeup and the high-scoring teams in their division.
With his talent, Gibson has the potential to finish above his current ADP of RB52 in single QB leagues. All he needs is an opportunity, and I believe he will get it with the new coaching staff of the Patriots. Being free from Rivera, his production will likely see a resurgence, as he will have a greater chance of getting more opportunities than he did in Washington.
Trade Value
Antonio Gibson’s trade value, as per DLF, is currently around a mid-to-late third-rounder in the 2024 rookie draft. If someone offered me that, I would’ve smashed accept without hesitation. But now I’m more reserved and it would depend on team makeup.
Right now, Gibson’s value is at its lowest for the 2024 season. Buying Gibson for a late third-round pick could get you a much better player than what you would likely find in the rookie draft. Gibson is currently available at a bargain price, and if he ends up in a role as the 1b to Rhamondre, he could return RB2 value, which could help you with flex starts or be flipped for assets that you can use.
The key to succeeding in a dynasty is to purchase players at a low price and sell them at a higher price. Gibson is an excellent example of a player you can acquire for a low price.
He can be a significant asset during the season and provide you with substantial benefits. There is a clear path for him to gain playing time, and even if Stevenson is not injured, I foresee him being used more frequently than he was in Washington.
However, if an injury occurs, he could step up and help you win a championship. Keep an eye out for players like Gibson, and let’s work towards another successful season!
