Here is our breakdown of 2023 Redraft Target: Jamaal Williams!
Estimated reading time: 4 minutes
Player Overview
Jamaal Williams has now joined his third team in seven years after signing a three-year contract with the New Orleans Saints. The writing was pretty much written on the wall for Williams when the signed David Montgomery from the Bears in free agency. The Saints also added QB Derek Carr after restructuring a few contracts like Michael Thomas and Jameis Winston. Jamaal Williams joins a stacked RB room with the alpha, Alvin Kamara who is facing a battery charge from an incident back in February 2022. The Saints also drafted RB Kendre Miller out of TCU in the third round to help fill a void if Alvin Kamara is suspended.
Fantasy Summary
Even though Jamaal Williams joined forces with Alvin Kamara in The Big Easy, I still like his fantasy outlook being Robin, instead of Batman. There is no denying that Jamaal Williams had a career year with the Detroit Lions last year after grinding out 1,066 yards and punching in 17 TDs. An argument, however, can be made that a severe regression is due to both his yardage total and touchdowns. That said, he has had modest improvement year over year since 2019 before breaking out, and almost doubling his yardage from 2021. One thing that has stayed consistent throughout his career is his 4.0 yards per carry. Williams also brings some toughness to the Saints in the goal-line where he led the league last year with 46 carries inside the 10-yard line.
His current ADP is sitting near 109 overall according to FantasyPros. It does feel that Williams is ranked appropriately being sandwiched between Damien Harris at RB38, and Zach Charbonnet at RB40. If Alvin Kamara is indeed suspended, which seems likely, then look for William’s stock to rise even higher where we could possibly be drafting him at his ceiling, and not gaining any real value.
