Here is Drew’s breakdown of 2023 Dynasty Target: Khalil Herbert!
Player Overview
Khalil Herbert is headed into his 3rd season with the Chicago Bears after being drafted in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft. However, this is his first offseason with a chance to come into the season as the Bears RB1, with David Montgomery coming into the offseason as an unrestricted free agent. If Herbert can survive free agency and the NFL draft without taking a huge hit, there are many reasons to be excited about Herbert as the Bears’ potential RB1. Let’s dive into his current team situation and career performance in order to see what we can make of his Dynasty Fantasy Football value!
Player Summary
Among running backs who played at least 100 snaps last season, Herbert was tied with Josh Jacobs as the 6th most elusive running back, according to PFF. Combined with his being ranked 12th amongst running backs in breakaway percentage using the same criteria, it’s no wonder Herbert was a valued commodity in the dynasty community heading into last season due to his 2021 performance, and it is not a shock that he is also a player many fantasy managers are paying attention to heading into the 2023 season.
The new offensive coordinator for the Bears last season, Luke Getsy, utilized Herbert in several ways, making him a very productive inside AND outside runner versus being just a one-cut zone runner in 2021 under Matt Nagy. Herbert’s major era of work that needs addressing is his ability to get upfield and turn receptions into larger receiving plays, indicative of his low Yards per Routes Run metric.
Fantasy Summary
There are admittedly a few things that could go wrong between now and the start of the 2023 season that could hurt Khalil Herbert’s dynasty value, but one thing we don’t have to worry about is the talent. Herbert’s talent is there, and the coaching staff already showed us last year that they’re not afraid to give their main RB over 60+% of the snaps based on the snap percentages of Herbert and Montgomery whenever they were both healthy last year. Khalil Herbert could give the Bears an affordable and effective option at the RB position not only for 2023 but 2024 as well before hitting unrestricted free agency in 2025.
